The grieving family of late kwaito legend Sandile Ngwenya, known by his stage name Mapaputsi, are pleading for privacy and respect in the wake of his passing.
The beloved musician, aged 48, died on September 5, 2024, after a brief illness, leaving fans and the industry in shock.
While the family is mourning, some individuals have reportedly attempted to exploit the tragedy for financial gain, adding to their distress.
According to City Press, a person claiming to be a close friend of Mapaputsi offered to transport the singer’s body from Durban and cover the associated costs.
However, this seemingly generous offer took a sinister turn. The family was informed that an undertaker, not of their choosing, had been hired.
When they refused to proceed with this arrangement, they were met with a shocking demand: the body of the “Woza Friday” hitmaker was allegedly held for ransom.
The supposed friend demanded R50,000 for storage and removal fees, leaving the family deeply hurt and outraged as they negotiated for their loved one’s remains.
Amid their grief, the family has planned services to honour Mapaputsi’s life and legacy.
According to The Daily Sun, a memorial service will be held at Eyethu Shopping Centre on Machaba Drive in Soweto on Thursday.
His funeral is set for Saturday at the Dlamini Multipurpose Centre Hall. Mapaputsi is laid to rest at the West Park Heroes Acre cemetery, where he will be honoured as a true icon of South African music.
The family continues to ask for compassion during this difficult time.
