Fans of the iconic Freshly Ground are in for a treat, as the group is set to take the country by storm with a big return in 2025.
It has been a while since listeners were entertained by the group. This comes following the exit of one of their lead singers, Zolani Mahola in 2019. The singer has been the heart and soul of the band, as they went on to produce several hits over the years including songs like Doo Be Doo and Fire is Low.
The singerโs departure came at a time when she wished to explore new challenges by venturing into a solo career. While her 17 years of service to the group has led her to play an integral role in the shaping of their identity, the groupโs drummer, Peter Cohen, says that this has been a good time for them to relook at their individual career paths and come up with a fresh perspective and a new lead singer to replace Zolani.
After months of trying to find a suitable candidate, they have found their match in 19-year-old Queue Mbali Makhoba.

Speaking to the entertainment publication Citizen about the process it took to find the perfect replacement, Peter said: โThe process had multiple layers of complexity. Not only were we looking for exceptional vocal talent, but we needed someone who could connect with our existing musical style while bringing their own fresh interpretation.โ
Meanwhile, the groupโs flautist Simon Attwell had nothing but praise to give to their new member.
โMbali is an extraordinary talent who brings both fearlessness and quiet confidence to her role.
โHer presence in rehearsals has been remarkable. She has this natural ability to command attention while remaining grounded,โ he said.
The singer, meanwhile, made her appearance at Kirstenbosch Gardens alongside the group and said that her goal is to stay true to the fundamentals of the group while bringing her own GenZ approach. Meanwhile, the group told the above-mentioned publication that 2025 will see them release brand new music soon.
