When the former Miss SA (2019) was named Miss Universe, she created history. According to Allure, she was the first black woman with afro-textured hair to win the global competition. With a total of 525 days under her belt (one year, five months, and eight days), she also held the record for the longest reign as Miss Universe.
In other Miss Universe news, Miss SA’s first runner-up Bryoni Govender – a qualified lawyer who hails from Kempton Park in Gauteng – is set set to represent South Africa at the 72nd Miss Universe pageant competition which takes place in El Salvador on November 18, 2023.
“I have always believed that being different is a superpower and becoming the second South African of Indian descent to represent our beautiful country on the international stage is a testament to that fact. I will be giving the competition my all and have already started extensive preparations,” said Bryoni in a statement seen by News24.
