On Wednesday, 14th February the world officially celebrated Valentine’s Day. A day when hopeless romantics have the opportunity to show appreciation to their significant other by showering them with love, gifts and all sorts of treats.
While our rugby stars are often viewed as being these tough men on the field, many of our World Cup winners showed just how affectionate they can be when it comes to the ones closest to their hearts.
One of these mighty tough men is the hooker Bongi Mbonambi. Known for running out in the colours of his local franchise the Sharks and also being a two-time World Cup winner, Bongi took to social media to thank the woman who does a good job in pushing him to achieve great things – his wife Anastacia.
Taking to his Instagram Bongi got a bit creative on his play with words, writing:
“Happy Valentine’s Day my coloured goose…ek kies jou kant tot die einde toe,” along with a picture of the pair and several emojis.
Later he asked his followers to please translate the Afrikaans bit to those on the other side – making reference to a previous altercation between him and England rugby player Tom Curry.

Last year Tom accused Bongi of calling him a “white cunt” during their semi-final clash at the 2023 World Cup. However, it was later revealed that when the two teams squared off in the scrum Bongi in fact asked his teammates “watter kant” meaning which side.
Meanwhile Bongi and Stacey have never shied away from publically showing love and affection to one another and have been married for 7 years.

Last year he thanked his wife for being the real champion and always sticking by his side.
“Here is to my beautiful wife, the true champion of the family. Thank you for being an amazing wife and an awesome mom.
“You have seen me at my best and at my worst, and still, you are always by my side.”
