Tony Forbes, the father of slain award-winning rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes, recently opened up about how he is coping seven months after his son’s untimely death.
While in conversation with eNCA, Tony shared that he and the family are “okay.” He added, “It is very difficult. In some ways, I feel it is even more difficult because after seven months we are starting to get to that stage where life is carrying on. Things are becoming more quiet.”
Speaking about his personal feelings, Tony shared, “For me, personally, I feel the gap, the hole of him not being with us anymore. I have my bad days and I have my better days but I think it will be like that for a while. It wasn’t just losing a child, but the circumstances and the emotional side are still there. The tears are very close. Anything can trigger an emotional state.”
Tony also stated that there is a risk of becoming paralysed by sitting with the pain. “What I found is that when I start to think more about his life in terms of the impact, it sort of inspires me to go and do similar things in my life. I find some comfort in getting up and doing those things.”
The father of three also mentioned that he is planning to write a book. He previously told TshisaLIVE he hopes to have AKA’s friends’ and fans’ written memories and turn them into a book.
“As much as we were sad, hearing those stories lifted us. It’s still difficult but I thought, ‘What if we take those stories and capture them in a book?’ So, that’s what I’m going to do. It’s a coffee-table book which will be like my Chicken Soup For the Soul, that when I’m down, I think about what they said and one day Kairo will read the book as well.”
