After it was announced that Thembi Seete would be one of the many new faces to premiere on the second season of Showmax’s Adulting, the multi-talented media personality delved into what made her say yes to the role, the intimate scenes in which she had to partake, and more.
With the first season premiering in March this year, the second season of Adulting is well on its way to reintroduce viewers to the lives of Johannesburg-based friends Bonga (played by Thembinkosi Mthembu), Eric (played by Nhlanhla Kunene), Mpho (played by Thabo Rammusi), and Vuyani (played by Luthando BU Mthembu).
Thembi is set to play Portia – a middle-aged, rich housewife who is at her sexual peak. The Kwaito Queen tells Showmax, “We know, as women, being spoiled is not enough. You still want care, love and someone to come back home to you and say, ‘I missed you’. That’s the part that’s lacking in Portia’s life.”
Speaking about why she said yes to the role, the actress shares that she had always wanted to work with the production company Tshedza Pictures, which has been responsible for many local, award-winning shows.
“I think they are exceptional storytellers. Also, there comes a point in life when you get tired of playing it safe. You sort of want to stretch yourself a bit and kind of surprise yourself,” says Thembi.
The star also made mention of the challenges she faced to bring the character to life, noting that her intimate scenes made her feel as if it was her first time acting. “That’s the beauty about acting. You can’t really say you’re comfortable with it because acting introduces you to different characters and different personalities.”
She added, “So with this one, it came with a whole lot of things that really shook me a little bit and made me uncomfortable. But I also love being uncomfortable.”
Having done a lot of firsts on the show, Thembi shares she was lucky to have been paired with Luthando, who she describes as easy-going.
“He made me so comfortable so I don’t think about myself too much. That’s the beauty about acting – it allows you to forget about yourself and to wear this character. I was able to put Thembi aside and be about Portia. But it’s also a blessing and a cherry on top when you have a co-actor that is as supportive and confident.”
Adulting S2 premieres on Showmax on 4 December 2023, with new episodes every Monday.
