South African entertainment acts continue to amaze us, putting the spotlight on this beautiful country with some of the best landscapes in the world. A multi-cultural country in the Southern part of Africa, mzansi is undoubtedly a big player in the global entertainment scene.
The latest act to stamp the South African mark in the global entertainment books is 22-year-old Johannesburg-born singer Tyla who won the Best African Music Performance at this year’s 66th Grammy Awards held at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena, for her global hit Water. Tyla was in the running with legends such as Nigerian Legends Burna Boy for his hit City Boys, Davido for Unavailable, singer Asake for Amapiano, Olamidie for his feature with Asake on Amapiano, South African amapiano singer Musa Keys for his feature with Davido on Unavailable and afro beats singer Ayra Starr for his song Rush.
Tyla’s win is iconic as not only is the Grammy her first award win but, she goes down in history as the youngest Grammy award winner an award she won without before releasing a full album. Her success for the Water song did not start with winning a Grammy, she also made the US Billboard Top 10. Tyla joins the likes of Black Coffee, Zakes Bantwini, the late Miriam Makeba, also known as Mama Africa, Nomcebo Zikode, and a few others.
Reacting to the singer’s Grammy win, internet users took to X, formerly known as Twitter to express their joy:
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa shared:
