An internet user on the popular app X, previously known as Twitter accused the Umkhonto Wesizwe party of using Limpopo-born singer Papa Penny for votes, after he wasn’t seen among the 58 party members who were sworn in as members of the National Assembly recently.
Papa Penny publicly announced that he was leaving the ANC as it had not treated him well.
Before ditching the ANC for MK, the Dance Khomela hitmaker had served a leading role working as an ANC ward councillor at the Giyani Municipality among other roles.
His ANC exit received attention from party leaders including Deputy President Paul Mashatile who contacted Papa Penny asking him not to leave the ANC, promising that they would resolve the problem on his return to Limpopo.
Some people thought that Papa Penny’s public move from the ANC to MK would earn him a sit in parliament as user @RhuNdimande shared in a post:
“So, Penny Penny is not good enough for parliament, but only for singing “bengu bengu”. He’ll soon learn how Jacob’s tribal MK stokvel works. Zuma is good at using people to benefit himself and his family. Ahee!”

The post attracted a lot of responses from internet users who shared that joining a party does not guarantee a sit in parliament:
Penny Penny joined MK very recent, there are many comrades who joined MK since from last year and they are not in any positions, some people have to go build structures, also leave MK Party to us and stop annoying

Another user who clearly likes Papa Penny commented:
