South African Grammy Award-winning deejay Nkosinathi Maphumulo famously known as Black Coffee’s is a living testament to the statement that says, hard work pays off. Gaining huge popularity in the early 2000s when he remixed the late Hugh Masekela’s Stimela, the deejay has earned the respect given to him both locally and internationally.
Behind all that success is a man who just wants to be known as himself and seen outside of his achievements. Well, it might be difficult considering his association with international superstars such as Usher, P.Diddy, Drake, Alicia Keys and many more.
Recently Black Coffee visited Kaya959’s The Best in T City hosted by radio veteran Thabo Those Mokwele to speak all things about himself. He also detailed his plane crash that, according to a British publication occurred on the 7th of January this year.
Speaking to Tbose the deejay shared that the incident happened while he was on his South American tour which he always does in January. He detailed that on the last leg of the show, the company he was using, had not provided him with a bigger plane he was used to. He shared that he was uncomfortable when he saw how old the plane looked. He also shared that he even took pictures with torn old carpets.
“It wasn’t so quick, and then I woke up it took like a minute. It gave me time to think while it was happening. I had time to pray while it was happening, I had time to hope that it was going to be over, while it was happening, I had time to think, while it was happening, said Black Coffee.
On the day of the accident, the deejay detailed that he was taking off from Brazil to Argentina with two American bodyguards. At the cruise phase of the flight, he shares that he took the seatbelt, reclined his seat and listened to a gospel album.
“Then I woke up to something that felt like a dream or a nightmare, the plane was shaking violently, like extremely violently and I opened my eyes, everyone was trying to hold on. At first, because I was sleeping, it felt like I was in a rolling car,” added Black Coffee.
He continued, detailing:
“It was moving so violently I fell on the floor. I still had my headphones, there was a song I was playing and it kept repeating, hallelujah, hallelujah, it kept repeating. Then it felt like a dream, because it was a lop, and the loop kept getting higher and higher. It felt like I had this choir or angels singing to save me.”
He went on to share that he got up from the floor and took his seat and the plane dipped leading to him hitting the plane roof and him being unconscious for a few seconds. He also shared that the plane was so destroyed that with everything broken and oxygen masks out of their ceiling storage. The We Dance Again hitmaker started feeling pain in his upper back and insisted for pilots to land. The accident damages his upper spinal cord. He now has metal holding his spinal cord.
