When thinking of the music scene in South Africa during the year 2017, one of the first names that comes to mind is Sho Madjozi. Born Maya Christinah Xichavo Wegerif, the Limpopo-born artist came onto the scene and quickly gained popularity and fame not only for her musical gifts but her unique style and charming personality.
Sho was able to gain popularity by utilising her ability to rap and sing in multiple native languages, XiTshonga and KiSwahili being part of those. Her distinct sound separated her from her peers and catapulted her career, turning her into a household name both locally and internationally, opening her up to huge opportunities such as being the first African artist to appear on the popular YouTube music channel ‘Colors‘.
Using the traction she got from her hit singles such as ‘Huku‘ and ‘Dumi hi phone‘ as well as the features she had been part of, the multi-award winner soon ventured into other businesses, such as a hair braiding company, which proved to be popular, particularly with the younger demographic.
Unfortunately, due to dealing with betrayal from people she trusted personally and professionally, the songstress decided that keeping a low profile would be what was best for her and her career. Although she appears to be doing just fine, the songstress has not been able to consistently get back to releasing music as she did early in her career.
Taking to Instagram, the multi-talented artist announced that she is ready to give the people what they want, with a new single dropping this month, and according to her, this is the first of many.
“I just got the final mix for my first single, dropping this month. It’s Sho time!”
