Zenande Mfenyana, known for her role in the popular TV series Generations, has opened up about the challenges she faces in the South African acting industry.

In a recent interview with Power FM, Zenande expressed her frustration with the growing trend of influencers dominating the industry. She revealed that it hurts her to see individuals securing roles solely based on their large social media following, rather than their acting talent.

Her sentiments were shared on social media by user Mashesha, who highlighted the actress’s candid criticism of the industry.

According to Zenande, the emphasis on social media presence has become overwhelming, with some casting directors even asking about an actor’s follower count during auditions. She finds this approach disheartening, believing that an actor’s talent should be the primary consideration, “It is very hurtful,” she said.

The actress recounted her own experiences, where she’s been asked to disclose her social media following during auditions. She said she chooses to leave this information out, questioning its relevance to her acting abilities. Instead, she believes that her work should speak for itself, and she’s confident that she can improve with opportunities.

Zenande’s comments have sparked a conversation about the state of the South African acting industry, where social media influence seems to be increasingly valued over traditional acting talent.

The actress’s stance emphasises the importance of merit-based casting, where actors are judged on their skills rather than their online presence.
