Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper and former captain Itumeleng Khune has been training hard to get himself to his former shape and reclaim his position as one of the best players in the Premier Soccer League.
Itumeleng has been playing for Amakhosi professionally for over 20 years, having started at an early age in 2004. He was later selected to join the national team by making his debut for Bafana Bafana in 2008.
The husband and father of two was temporarily laid off soccer after he was suspended and stripped off his captaincy for allegedly arriving to practice intoxicated.
Following the alleged intoxication at soccer practice, the Naturena based team released a statement after holding an internal disciplinary hearing stating they were temporarily releasing the goalkeeper from his training duties and stripping him off his captaincy.
Fast forward to now, Itumeleng has been welcomed back to the village by his team. In a statement available on the team’s website the team states:
“As Kaizer Chiefs, we welcome Itu back to the home he has known for over 25 years and we remain committed to our core values of discipline, integrity, respect, and unity.”
They also add:
“During his three-month absence, Khune says he fully participated in the programmes set out for him and believes they assisted with his personal growth and development as a professional athlete as well as an individual. He looks forward to working hard at training and sharing his knowledge with his teammates.”
Clearly excited and ready to reclaim his top spot, Itumeleng has been sharing videos and pictures of his training progress on his social media platforms.
His latest share is a picture of his well-toned body taken while jogging. The picture clearly showing signs of an improvement in fitness, he captioned his post:
“You made that choice to improve for a reason. Don’t go backwards to habits and situations that weren’t helping you evolve. You have to keep reminding yourself WHY you even decided to move forward. Stay positive about what’s to come by being CONSISTENT with your change now.”
