Jan Braai says his piece on alleged racist incident: ‘We can’t let things divide us’

Local TV personality Jan Scannell, affectionately known as Jan Braai, has put any doubts to rest about his alleged racist behaviour towards a man of colour.

The businessman was filmed giving free boerewors rolls to shoppers outside a Food Lover’s Market in Cape Town in celebration of Heritage Day.

During one exchange with a man of colour patiently waiting for his roll, Jan appeared to ignore him.

A local news agency reported on the story after watching a marketing video supplied by Food Lover’s Market. The news outlet approached Jan about the incident and angled the story around his allegedly racist behaviour without seeing the video in its entirety.

Food Lovers swiftly put any rumours and misinformation to rest and released the full CCTV footage. The footage has since “debunked” the racist incident and did show the businessman handing over a freebie to the man in question.

In the aftermath of the incident, Jan spoke to Good Things Guy. “We need to focus on our country’s positivity.

“We can’t let things divide us, especially things that are not true.”

Since Jan was vindicated, the news outlet published an updated report on the initial story, saying: “In hindsight, News24 should have insisted on seeing the full CCTV footage of the event before publishing a story about the honestly held views of readers, based on partial video footage released by Food Lover’s Market.

“We apologise to Jan Braai and the other individuals involved.”
