Reeva Steenkamp’s mother will share on a talk show why she believes that her daughter’s killer should not be on parole.
June Steenkamp – mother of Reeva- is on a quest for justice. According to the South African, in March, the South African Department of Correctional Services announced that a board had rejected Oscar’s parole application.
Oscar Pistorius is a former South African sprinter who murdered his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his home in Pretoria 10 years ago, on 14 February 2013. Oscar was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison. It is reported that he will face a new parole hearing in August 2024.
However, Oscar Pistorius was not eligible for parole, according to the department’s statement, because he did not complete his minimum sentence. Before being eligible for parole, convicts must serve at least half of their prison term in South African law.
June and Barry Steenkamp, Reeva’s parents, vehemently oppose to Oscar’s expectations for an early release.
June will share her views on an Australian current affairs programme called Insights, according to the Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation.
The TV show, called Seeking Justice, is about loved ones killed in tragic events.
The foundation praised June for her “bravery” in speaking out, in a Facebook post last month. It shared: “Proud of you, June Steenkamp. You continue to inspire.”
The Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp Foundation also shared that the Insights episode starring June will air on 22 July 2023.
Despite the show airing on the Australian SBS TV network, South African viewers will be able watch the episode on the show’s YouTube channel.
