A Khayelitsha business woman is finding herself in cloud nine after a devastating setback propelled her to explore other avenues that now appears to be finally paying off.
Like several South Africans Ncumisa Mkabile is one of many people whose business suffered a major knock as a result of the Corona virus pandemic. The effect that it had on the economy resulted in the savvy entrepreneur having to close the doors of her catering business.
Despite the setback, she made sure to not let that deter her from achieving her goals, soon venturing into the agricultural sector, farming both crops as well as livestock.
Fast forward to the year 2024 and her perseverance is definitely showing the fruits of her labour.
The proud mom was recently honoured with an Ubuntu Youth Diplomacy Award, at this year’s Ubuntu Awards held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The award is given to those between the ages of 18 – 35 “who through their actions, activities and achievements have promoted South Africa as a dynamic country with an enabling environment for youth to thrive and contribute to making South Africa and world a better place,” explains the High Commission of South Africa.
The event which is currently in its 8th year is often held after the annual State of the Nation Address, bringing together captains of industry, leaders from civil society, members of Cabinet and distinguished guests, in addition to all Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to South Africa.

Speaking about what the honour of receiving the mighty award means to her Ncumisa told entertainment publication, Briefly News: “Getting this award means the world to me because I got to share the stage with legends. I’m hoping and praying that it will open many doors for me.”
When asked about how she has been able to rise from her 2020 setback and how business was doing now, she added:
“I’ve been doing well. My business has grown because of the support I’m getting from social media and my community. I’ve decided to diversify farming and that has helped me to create more job opportunities.
“I’ve also received numerous accolades and got to work with major brands, both local and international, and I’m grateful for every opportunity.”

Currently the only challenge that she has is access to finding and not having enough land to expand her business. She explained that she is in desperate need of a refrigerated trailer as many of her products are transported from the Eastern Cape.
