Well-renowned Motswako rapper Khuli Chana has recently spoken about what motivated him to make a success out of his career.
Khuli, well known for having released reveal smash hits that include Have Nots, and Never Grow Up, revealed that life as an upcoming artist in South Africa was not necessarily the easiest.
Khuli recently returned to his home town, Mahikeng where he attended the Township Entrepreneurs Alliance (TEA) seminar – an event held in partnership with Nedbank to empower township-based companies and entrepreneurs with knowledge sharing, as well as skills development to access the market.
Here he pointed out some of his setbacks prior to making it big in the entertainment industry.
The 41-year-old claimed to have been rejected by several major labels and used this rejection as the fuel he needed to propel himself to reach the heights he set out for himself.
“My entrepreneurship journey started by default; it was inspired by rejection. After being rejected by all major labels, from Sony, EMI at the time… I had to go independent, that’s when I dropped Motswakoriginator,” said Khuli Chana.
He explains that without a proper plan in place, it felt like do or die, which meant that he had to take a leap of faith and jump.
“I’m not a born entrepreneur; it’s just something I had to do. I figured I needed to be heard, I have an amazing product, I only had to start just start,” he explained.

Looking back, he says that he is amazed at far he has come.
“I wanted to create something that could be bigger than myself,” he said.
In 2022 the rapper launched the Khuli Chana studios to give young creators in TV, podcasting an opportunity to express themselves, more recently he also obtained his honours degree in Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the South African film school, AFDA.
