DJ and radio personality Lamiez Holworthy has opened up about what it was like being a child of mixed heritage.
Known for her vibrant spirit that saturates the room of each place she steps her foot into, it is easy to assume that the love Lamiez gains today has always been a part of her journey. However, this perception was recently proven to be inaccurate after she opened up about her difficult childhood.
In a recent interview on DJ Fresh’s WAW: What A Week podcast, the wife of Khuli Chana shared that being a child of Indian and Black heritage she was often discriminated against by her mother’s side of the family.
This was because she looked much different from her Indian m her Indian relatives since her father was a black man.
“My mom had to choose between having me and her family. It was terrible. They wrote my mom off. I was the black sheep of the family. I looked black, and I didn’t have their kind of hair, which made it worse.
“They would tell people that I was a product of rape. I first heard it from my Indian cousin when everyone in school kept asking how come I was black while my cousins are Indian,” she explained.
Despite this, she later acknowledged the role that her mother played in ensuring that she continued to have the most normal childhood.
“My mom had to hide for the longest time, but she chose me, and she continued to choose me. My mom raised me with so much love that I could not tell the difference between myself and my siblings. My mom has always been ready to go to war for me.”
In her reflecting on the success of her current life, she believes that none of it would be possible if it were not for the resilient spirit of her mother who refused to give up when their family was hit by financial woes.
“I grew up in a very happy home. I come from love. I was raised by my mom and my stepfather, who went out of their way to make sure that my siblings and I were good.”
Last year social media went into a frenzy after music mogul Chicco Twala revealed that he was the father of the prominent DJ. This came after the producer attended the christening ceremony of Lamiez and Khuli’s baby.

Meanwhile, Chicco has refused to share insights into his past with Lamiez’ mother Imelda, and opted not to speak about his children in the media.
