The late kwaito star Simphiwe ‘General’ Sibisi’s family has allegedly become a victim of fraudsters days after his passing.
Earlier this week, it was reported by news publication, News24 that the Chiskop member passed away after succumbing to cancer.
A statement released by the family read, “The family of Siphiwe ‘General GTZ’ Sibisi announces with deep sadness our great loss suffered through the passing of our dear one, after hospitalisation where he underwent major surgery.”
“Despite showing some signs of recovery, he took a turn for the worse over the past few days and finally lost his brave battle earlier today, 29 September 2024. We wish to thank all those who loved and supported him during his years as a prominent and pioneering music entertainer of our beloved South African people. May his beautiful, kind spirit live on through the legacy of his Kwaito music.”
Despite it only being a few days since his passing, ZiMoja reported that the Sibisi family has now become victim to a scam consisting of insurance money payouts.
According to the above-mentioned source, someone impersonating themselves as a Universal Music lawyer reached out to the late star’s sister claiming that they wanted money in exchange for helping with claims.
Speaking on the phone call with this alleged lawyer, the sister, Zamo Mguli said, “He counted the list of people which included my brother Xolani as beneficiaries. I then decided to add my brother Xolani on the call.”
According to the lawyer General insurance claim payout was R30k, adding that, the music company would move the body from one place to another.
She adds that she never suspected this to be a scam but realised it later when she had to send money for every process to be completed but when it was time to give money the person was nowhere to be found.
