Late singer Miriam Makeba’s house reportedly treated as ‘drug den’

The Northriding home of the late global music icon and civil rights leader Miriam Makeba has reportedly fallen into disrepair, transforming into what locals describe as a “dilapidated drug den.”

According to City Press, neighbours of the legendary singer’s property have raised serious concerns about suspected drug-related activities, saying the neglect and alleged illegal use are posing safety risks to the surrounding community.

City Press also reported that a tenant living on the property mentioned that the house has seen no upkeep for years.

Maintenance is neglected, and a third-party representative collects rent on behalf of Makeba’s grandchildren.

As the property deteriorates, the memory of the woman known worldwide as “Mama Africa” seems increasingly forgotten, stirring frustration and sadness among her admirers.

Social media users have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express their distress and propose ways to honour Makeba’s impact better.

@morwalatswai73 suggested: “Why not convert it to something else? Mama Africa left a vibrant legacy. My favourite one.”

@Maru_KGee echoed similar sentiments, saying, “This is sad. Why not turn the property into a heritage site? Miriam is probably turning in her grave.”

Another user, @PapiSpeare, suggested a radical transformation: “Must just be demolished or rehabilitated and turned either into a rehab centre or orphanage.”

Miriam Makeba, celebrated for “The Click Song, Pata Pata” and many other memorable songs died on November 9, 2008, after collapsing on stage in Italy.

Her voice and activism left a powerful imprint on the world, making the state of her former home a poignant reminder of the need to preserve her memory with respect and care.
