The 2024 Paris Olympics provided people all around the world with a sense of joy and excitement, as many found themselves glued to their television screens in support of those donning the colours of their country.
As for South Africa, the case is similar. Despite not competing in every competition, there have been a few notable stand-out performances by the Blitzboks in rugby, Tatjana Smith in swimming as well as the mountain biker Alan Hatherly – all who walked away with medals at this year’s prestigious tournament.
With sprinters like Wade van Niekerk and others set to showcase their talents after qualifying for the semi-finals in the 200-meter sprints, TV and radio presenter Lerato Kganyago has made a confident claim that sparked instant reactions from the social media community.
Taking to social media, she said that she confidently believes that she has what it takes to compete at the highest level and run like the American women’s sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson.
In a video shared on social media, she said: “So guys, I’m just watching the highlights of the Olympics, and of course, I’m watching Sha’Carri because I’m such a huge fan. And I’m like, ‘Are you born with this talent or is it just hard training and dedication?’
“Because I am sitting here and, in my head, I can run as fast as she can if I put my mind to it.”
She later posed the question to her followers asking what they thought before affirming that she truly believes she can do it.
The video was posted at a time when Lerato deactivated her X account after receiving backlash for defending Miss South Africa contestant Chidimma Adetshina.
