Deejaying twins Bandile and Banele Mbere, who form the popular group Major League DJz, caused a bit of a stir on Twitter after questioning what the South African government was doing to support amapiano since it took the world by storm.
Due to amapiano’s worldwide popularity, many international artists are wanting to dip their toes into the genre, including American rapper Swae Lee, who received a ton of backlash after many thought the rapper was stating that the genre originated in Nigeria.
After Swae’s error, the twins took to Twitter, writing, “All said and done. We can fight all these guys all we want… but what is South Africa doing for piano to make sure piano is really taken to the world? What has government done for Piano? This is our best export but what support have we given to the genre to make sure it touches all corners of the world? Let’s fight and address the right issues to make sure the genre gets the best support possible.”

Tweeps shared their opinion on the matter, with many being against Bandile and Banele’s tweet.
After a tweep stated that they thought Ladysmith Black Mambazo was South Africa’s best export, the DJs replied, “We talking current affairs.”

Controversial music executive Nota Baloyi also shared his opinion.
Why must we wait for government? They’ll never empower you because they want you to depend on them forever… Keep fighting, what would’ve happened if everyone stopped fighting after Steve Biko was killed? They kill the fighters because they’re loosing the war. Blood will spill!✊?

Here is what other tweeps had to say.
Government isn’t needed here. Artists should take initiative as entrepreneurs and secure their legacy in South Africa, the continent and global community https://t.co/GQAIMq7MlE

On the Tourism perspective it would be great if we host Amapiano festivals in south Africa inviting the world to come and enjoy the music in our country
