Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, condemned the killing of a University of Johannesburg (UJ) student.
As reported by Sunday World, a shooting occurred in Braamfontein near a student residence where three people died, including the student. It is alleged that the UJ student was caught in the crossfire of a drive-by shooting.
According to TshiaLIVE, the UJ student was identified as David Nkosingiphile Nxumalo, from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal who was doing his second year in BCom accounting.
In a media briefing, the Minister of Higher Education sent his condolences to the Nxumalo family whilst detailing the cause of the drive-by shooting. He was candid about the boy’s financial woes, adding that the young boy was a NSFAS beneficiary (an aid used to pay off previously disadvantaged students’ fees).
The statement released by the Department of Education says, “Further to this, the minister will also contact the minister of police to assess this disturbing incident and jointly implement the necessary measures to avoid a repeat of this dastardly act,” adding that, “The minister condemns this cruel act of lawlessness and believes that as a country, we must not tolerate what seems to be a growing culture of impunity on the part of criminal elements and a blatant disregard for human life.”
