Former president Thabo Mbeki recently delivered a talk at the University of South Africa’s Winnie-Madikizela-Mandela building, Muckeneuck campus in an event attended by distinguished guests, professors and students.
The Conversation with Thabo Mbeki is part of Thabo Mbeki African school of Public and International Affairs programme.
While delivering his talk, the former president touched many things including former President Jacob Zuma who publicly announced that he was still a member of the ANC, but in support and politicly campaigning for the newly formed MK party.
The former president addressed the breakaway by members of the ANC adding:
“In the context of what’s been happening in the country, how do we understand breakaways? Take the MK party, you can’t say I remain a member of the ANC, but I support a party which is going to campaign to defeat the ANC, that doesn’t make sense.”
He continued, “one of those two things is wrong, in terms of these breakaway from the ANC, take that breakaway. You can understand that.”

He also added:
“It says so in black and white Jacob Zuma was part of the leadership in the process to destroy SARS. That’s not my opinion, I’m telling you what the Zondo commission says. Thats a bit of a conundrum, that you’d have the president of Republic of South Africa, participate in the process to destroying the institution that gives him the means to govern. Thats the kind of contradiction, it’s a contradiction that raises the question. Who indeed is this president?”
“And of course you know who the president was and it says in black and white Jacob Zuma was part of the leadership in the process to destroy SARS that’s not my opinion I’m telling you what the Zondo commission says” Former President Thabo Mbeki pic.twitter.com/ixuAK4ZtmU
