Former Generations actress Nambitha Mpumlwana is set to play Winnie Mandela in a new theatre production called, The Cry of Winnie Mandela.
Nambitha, who was one of 16 cast members fired by Generations creator Mfundi Vundla over salary disputes, will be portraying the iconic role of South African anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
As reported by entertainment publication, ZiMoja, the actress says said that “I studied some of her history and videos. In the end, though, I have to create her anew.”
The Cry of Winnie Mandela is based on the much-admired novel published in 2003 by the renowned poet, novelist, and essayist Njabulo Ndebele.
The entertainment publication describes this production as one that lets viewers explore the wide range of historical allusions while also experiencing intense emotions, enabling viewers to better understand how powerful and resilient political personalities can be over time.
The production, directed by Kgomotso ‘Momo’ Matsunyane, portrays the narrative of women who waited for their men to return from exile, including Winnie Mandela’s story who waited 27 years for the release of her husband former president Nelson Mandela.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela posted on X (formerly Twitter) to announce this news. Many X users took to the comment section to congratulate both actresses.

I’m going! I like that it has a long run because I prefer catching a play when actors have fully immersed themselves in their characters
