As the school year commenced not so long ago, yesterday was quite a big day for matric students from all over South Africa.
After facing multiple sleepless nights and possibly panic attacks, individuals who had just completed Grade 12 were finally set free from the wait of receiving the National Senior Certificate exam results that they had been waiting for.
The Independent Examination Board (IEB) class of 2023 did a notable job in achieving a 98.46% pass rate in the 2023 National Senior Certificate exams. As the IEB class of 2023 worked tirelessly, one trailblazing student who attended St. Mary’s School, Waverley, deserves quite the accolade for her excellent accomplishment.
Joanne Futshellar is the first blind student to have written the National Senior Certificate exit exams. Adding to her history-making moments, the individual further shared that she had obtained seven distinctions, placing her in the top 1% of students at her school.
Joanne, along with St. Mary’s School, Waverley, continues to break world records as the school raises the bar for other mainstream schools to follow in their footsteps of being inclusive for students.
South African artist and mother of two, Nandi Madida, took to Instagram to congratulate Joanne for her acquisition while also showing gratitude to all those who aided in her support. She said, “What an absolute inspiration, Jo! You are the girl you think you are! May God continue to bless you abundantly in all that you do. A big shoutout to her family, support structure, and St. Mary’s for supporting her journey.”
In her caption, Nandi also congratulates St. Mary’s School, Waverley, for pushing the notion of inclusive education in mainstream schools. Stating, “Inclusive education in mainstream schools for all students where they can thrive is the most important thing a school can do. What a time to be alive! Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.”
