A brand-new documentary which focuses on the African National Congress’ struggle against apartheid is set to make its way onto screens at this year Joburg Film Festival.
The documentary, titled Umkhonto weSizwe – Mandela Secret Army, will focus on the lives of the unsung heroes who fought for freedom in the Umkhonto weSizwe movement also known as MK.
Speaking to news and entertainment publication Daily Sun, one of the original members of MK, Zola Maseko, who will also feature in the project says that this documentary will shed light on the differences between the ANC of the past who was seen as a liberation movement and the one of today which is considered more of an organisation.
As a film-maker he explains that the idea for this documentary came from a conversation he had with a documentary director Osvalde Lewat from Cameron who he met in 2008
He said she was surprised to have found out that Nelson Mandela had an MK who helped him fight for freedom, yet he received most of the glory for liberating the country. This motivated him to do something that will give more insight into what took place during that era.
Viewers will therefore be introduced to some of the surviving members of the MK where they will share some of their experiences, with key emphasis on proving that there once was an ANC who fought the good fight for freedom.
“The ANC of today has been hijacked by the counter revolutionists who are betraying what the liberal ANC fought for,” he said.
He added: “That liberal ANC was not about money, cars, or what people can get for themselves, but it was about freedom and what they achieved.”
