After being the target of an independent police investigation directorate (IPID), Kwa-Zulu Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi can breathe a sigh of relief as the letter of complaint sent against him has reportedly been withdrawn.
The alleged withdrawal of the letter comes after an anonymous complaint was made against the lieutenant general for his involvement in interfering in the arrest of former head of Westville Maximum Prison Nelly Ndlovu. In response to these allegations, Nhlanhla has maintained his innocence and voiced his concern about a smear campaign forged against him to undermine his leadership. According to the commissioner, the method that he has adopted to attempt to eradicate crime in KZN has received mixed reactions and opinions, as some welcome it, while others passionately oppose it.
Speaking to IOL, Nhlanhla confirmed that IPID has contacted him to let him know that the complaint letter sent against him has been withdrawn and that he no longer has to respond as they had instructed.
“Yes, I can confirm I was advised by the Independent Investigative Police Directorate (IPID) that I no longer need to respond, and the letter has been withdrawn,” he tells the publication.
However, IPID’s spokesperson, Lizzy Suping’s failure to confirm whether or not the investigation against Nhlanhla has been withdrawn has caused concern among the public, as they are not certain about the particulars of the case. Organisations such as the Public Services Association welcome the new developments; however, they have requested full clarification from IPID to confirm the full status of the matter. According to the association, as well as some members of the public, this withdrawal will bring an end to Nhlanhla’s unwarranted harassment.
