The late legendary actor Patrick Shai’s son, Sechaba Shai is said to be homeless and struggling with substance abuse.
Patrick was a South African director and actor who starred in television drama series’ such as Generations, Hearts & Minds, Ashes to Ashes, 7de Laan and many more.
Born on the 9th of December, 1956 in Sophiatown, Patric left this earth on January the 22nd, 2022, when he was allegedly found hanging in his Dobsonville home garage by his wife Mmasechaba Shai who took him off the rope and played him on the floor.
As reported by local publication ZiMoja, Sechaba who had a drug problem and cleaned his act relapsed back into drugs in July 2023, after he had been clean for two years. The publication spoke to a source close to Sechaba who revealed that he now lives off pushing a trolley with groceries for shoppers.
The source also added that Sechaba was chased out of his home by his mother Masechaba. The source was also quoted saying:
“This guy used to look so good and looked like Bob Mabena and he is very intelligent. Now he looks like a hobo because of the drugs, it’s really sad.”
Patrick’s death is said to have pushed Sechaba back to drugs as he never received counseling for his death. After his father’s death, Sechaba was quoted saying:
“His greatest wish was for me to be a proper family man irrespective of whatever field I got into.”
Contrary to the first reports which claimed that Mmasechaba discovered Patrick’s hanging body, the source told the publication that it was Sechaba who found his father hanging. The publication also noted that the source revealed that the late Patrick visits Sechaba in his sleep:
“He said he sees him every day when he goes to sleep and that is the reason he did not fight when his mother kicked him out of the house. He just wanted to stay away from the house hoping the nightmares will end,” shared ZiMoja.
In an interview with the publication Sechaba shared:
“I want to be clean and go back to go back to being part of Kwanele Foundation where I was heading the office of KwaneleNziswa educating others on issues of drugs and substance abuse. Please help me before it’s too late.”
