The South African Police Service (SAPS) says it has spent ‘countless hours and endless manpower’ on tracing those responsible for the murders of award-winning rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.
SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says a dedicated team of specialists, seasoned detectives, analysts and technicians are working closely with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in KwaZulu-Natal.
‘It is important to highlight that this is a prosecution-driven investigation,’ says Mathe. ‘We have gathered critical evidence. From what has been communicated. We have made progress, we have positive evidence linking identified suspects, [and] others are in custody related to other matters. Others are on the run, and the team is hot on their heels.’
Rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and his close friend, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, were gunned down outside a restaurant on Florida Road on 10 February 2023. A second person, believed to be AKA’s bodyguard, was wounded.
The public has since criticised the SAPS due to the case still being unsolved.
According to Mathe, the investigation is at a ‘very sensitive stage’.
‘We are aware of limited communication with the affected families, the investigation is at a very sensitive stage and we have therefore [decided] to limit all communication related to this matter.’
‘The limited communication was not at all intended to undermine any of the affected families. We will, however, endeavour to improve on this in the near future.’
