South African football fans can breathe a sigh of relief as PSL has secured a new sponsor for the league, in time for the commencement of the next season.
The news comes after the previous sponsor, DSTV pulled out of an agreement that was set to last until 2025. The decision was made due to DSTV’s uncertainty with its financial standing, according to speculation.
The league has named online gambling company Betway as their next sponsor, with a three-year agreement valued at approximately R900m. “This partnership, I must remind you, is the single biggest investment in South African sport,” says Betway CEO Laurence Michel.
The new deal with Betway signifies a new beginning and new chapter for PSL, as it promises to elevate the game to new heights and contribute to the growth of football and its culture in South Africa.
“This is a monumental day for South African football. Betway’s commitment to our league demonstrates their confidence in our vision and potential. This partnership will undoubtedly propel our league to new heights,” says PSL chairman Dr Irvan Khoza.
The chairman also reiterated that DSTV would not be fined for exiting their deal earlier than the agreement with PSL. He added that the DSTV Diski Challenge will continue as it is a separate five-year deal while assuring the masses that the season will kick off on the 3rd of August as planned.
Football fans are both excited and anxiously waiting for their teams’ fixtures to be released.
“Now drop the fixtures,” says one user on X (formally Twitter).
