Mom of two Rachel Kolisi took to social media to share a picture of herself, her kids (Nicholas and Keziah) and her husband Siya’s sister (Liphelo) at a hair salon. She expressed that it was the first time they all had their hair done at the same place, while also calling for diversity in salons in South Africa.
Rachel captioned her Instagram post, “The first time EVER we could all have our hair done at the same place. I forgot to post this a few months ago, but something that I’ve been thinking about for sometime, is why so many hair salons in SA specifically, only offer services for ‘either or.'”
She added that on that day, they had visited a few places to get a haircut for Nicholas. “..[A]fter being told 3 times ‘we can’t cut hair like that’ [we] found a spot where all of our hair was celebrated, and my goodness we loved it! Generally, just feel salons could do better, and diversify ??♀️.”

Many social media users took to Rachel’s comments section to share that they agreed with her statement, as well as their similar experiences.
One said, “This is such an interesting perspective?? inclusivity everywhere, we could do better.”
Another social media user added, “I think salon owners should adopt the corporate way of empowering their staff by taking them to hair expos and training to broaden their skills. It’s even painful finding a salon that won’t pull your child’s hair follicles or burn their afro when blow drying them???.”
“Wait till you get overseas where they can’t do certain hair types ?♀️ story of my life,” shared another.
