Officially commencing on 26 July 2024, there has been no shortage of festivities, from the opening ceremony to the action-packed games.
Team South Africa, arriving with approximately 150 athletes to compete in various sporting codes is looking to improve on their performance in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where they came away with three medals in total.
Rugby
The quest for the podium is off to a great start for mzansi as the South African rugby sevens team won the match for third place after beating the Australian team 26-19. Shaun Williams scored the game-winning try after an unselfish assist from Selvyn Davids.

Swimming
Tatjana Smith and Pieter Coetze are also realistic medal contenders as they had impressive showings in their races so far. Tatjana has advanced to the 100m breaststroke semi-finals after clocking an impressive time of 1:05.00.

Pieter on the other hand safely qualified for the 100m backstroke semifinals as the second fastest qualifier.

Surfing
Currently, fifth in the world rankings, Jordy Smith won his heat against Indonesian Rio Waida, progressing to the third round and keeping the goal for a medal alive.
Team SA participated in various other sporting codes such as skateboarding, field hockey, equestrian and rowing. However, our athlete’s performances were not enough for them to advance to the next round of their respective sporting codes.
With the tournament just beginning, there are many events to look forward to and many South African athletes to follow and support.
Supersport channels are available to catch some events live and have made it convenient for people to support their favourite athletes.
Minister Gayton McKenzie has also shown support to our athletes and expressed the joy and pride they have made him feel.
