A brand new singing competition show, uShuni Womhlaba, is set to celebrate South Africa’s rich and diverse musical talent when it premieres on SABC 1 on 7 July 2024.
This exciting new reality show focuses on the Maskandi and Mbhaqanga genres, providing a platform for talented singers to showcase their skills.
According to a press release on X (previously known as Twitter) uShuni Womhlaba is produced by Thabo Mphelo Films in partnership with SABC 1, with Telkom SA coming on board as the main sponsor. The show aims to show the hidden musical gems scattered throughout South Africa’s nine provinces, celebrating the country’s unique musical heritage nationwide.
A total of 40 contestants will be selected through a combination of regional and online auditions, ensuring that aspiring Maskandi and Mbhaqanga artists from every corner of the country have the opportunity to participate. These auditions will open up the competition to a wide array of talent, highlighting the diverse musical landscape of South Africa.
The competition will go on for 16 weeks, with each episode bringing viewers closer to discovering the next big star in Maskandi and Mbhaqanga music. The journey will end in October 2024.
