Insurance and investment group Old Mutual came under fire when Sebabatso Molefi took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to call out the insurance giant for not honouring a court order to pay her mother’s money.
The matter was shared by the user whose handle is @Seba_S_M on the 5th of March, later receiving almost 1.5 million views and many comments.
The post detailed:
“Dear @OldMutualSA please advise why you are refusing to release my mother’s money even though a court order has been provided. You are in contempt of court, and I am about to lose my cool right now.”

After internet users saw the post, they started sharing similar experiences with the same insurance company. Among those who had a bad story to share involving the company was Grammy Award winner Zakes Bantwini, who detailed that Old Mutual only paid out R380 for his mother’s burial.
Old Mutual became a topic for many days after that with many people expressing their disappointment on how they handled Sabataso’s case.
The investment company later apologised and promised a solution to the problem.
After a meeting up with Old Mutual and her mother’s lawyers, Sebabatso took to the same social media platform to share an update:
“Myself and Mama’s lawyers Morolong Inc, met with Old Mutual this morning. The meeting was positive, Old Mutual tabled 2 options towards a full and final settlement of the matter. We have requested further information/clarity on each, subsequently to which we will take the final decision.”
She concluded by thanking internet users for their support, commenting:
“I would like to thank everyone for their continued support on this journey.”
Hi everyone! 😊
