The case of Sekhukhune United FC’s Shaune Magaila has been a mind-boggling one, as it has seen the player returning to the pitch while facing alleged culpable homicide and reckless driving charges. The family of Shaune’s victim have revealed that the club was not honest about an earlier statement.
Mzansi continues to watch on as Sekhukhune United FC’s winger Shaune Magaila’s unique case continues to play out in the public eye. In November 2024, a video of the player’s car colliding with oncoming traffic went viral as it was revealed that one passenger had died on the scene, while the surviving mother sustained major injuries. This resulted in public uproar as users speculated that Shaune was drinking and driving, they condemned him for his actions, highlighting the dire and fatal consequences.
Fast forwarding to February 2025, the country was shocked to see the Sekhukhune player back on the pitch, ready to tackle his team’s opponents among his teammates, as though he was not part of an ongoing court case. In response, EyeWitness reported that the club’s head coach Lehlohonolo Seema revealed that the victim’s family were aware and had given their blessing
“They understand that it was an accident. It could have happened to one of us here. It also shows the family, trust me they did not forget, but they are trying to forgive. They say time heals and that is why this boy can come to the field and do this because he knows that the family said: ‘Your life doesn’t have to stop, but we know what happened and let’s see how it will go’,” the coach told the above-mentioned publication.
In an interesting turn of events, Radio2000‘s Thabiso Mosia revealed that he had conducted an interview with the family’s spokesperson Sifiso Skosana, and during that interview, he revealed that these claims by Lehlohonolo were false. He also said that they revealed they had never met with the head coach or anyone from the club.
“We are shocked by the reports that we have given Sekhukhune United our blessings for Shaune Mogaila to play again. For the record,we have never met Mogaila nor his family or Sekhukhune Utd since that tragic accident ‘-Sfiso Skhosana, family spokesperson of the deceased #Radio2000 pic.twitter.com/GrB5OYFCuk
