The local movie and series streaming service, Showmax, is eager to give Mzansi viewers a behind-the-scenes look into the lives of some of South Africa’s most prominent widows with its brand-new series – “Widows Unveiled.”
Showmax recently released a teaser of the soon-to-be-aired series, and by the looks of it, it promises to be overwhelmed with drama in the form of sadness and joy as the ladies each share personal testimonies of how they have navigated their lives around living without their deceased husbands.

The cast includes PR specialist and marketing professional Lerato Sengadi, the widow of Motswako legend HHP; businesswoman Mpho Tshabalala, the widow of kwaito legend Mandoza; businesswoman Sikelelwa Ngubane, the widow of SAFTA-winning actor Menzi Ngubane; businesswoman Fundiswa Molefe, the widow of businessman John Molefe; and businesswoman Lerato Maphatsoe, the widow of former Defence Minister Kebby Maphatsoe.
Speaking to local entertainment publication IOL, Lerato Sengadi said that the main reason she agreed to be part of the show was due to the fact that widowhood is often treated like a taboo.
“Throughout my journey as a young widow, I realised that black widows, specifically, have it harder. It’s a generational curse and pattern.”
“Women can’t speak openly about these experiences; they can’t speak about the pain and the journey to rediscovering yourself after loss.”
She added that while widows often made fun of and being referred to as trauma bonders, she wanted to let others know that there is nothing to be ashamed of.
The 10-part series is set to be released on the 12th of February.
