The life of an upcoming superstar is not only glitz and glamour, it also comes with constant and unsolicited criticism and South African popstar Tyla is quickly learning this. Despite her self-titled debut album reaching global success, the young songstress did not score a single Grammy nomination, garnering one of the biggest snubs in awards history.
The Grammy Awards ceremony has existed for 65 years, and although their main objective is to shine a light and recognise musical excellence, they have been known to get a few things wrong, specifically leaving out well-deserved nominees. For instance, popular rapper Nicki Minaj is yet to win a single Grammy Award despite having one of the most successful rap careers we have yet to witness.
This year, the Grammy’s left a few notable names from their nominees list, but one that stands out for us is Mzansi’s hotshot Tyla. This comes as a complete considering that the young songstress made six submissions to the coveted institution, including ‘Album of the Year’ as well as ‘Song of the Year’ for her smash it ‘Jump’.
Among the many who have spoken out against this atrocity is the popular American publication Rolling Stone, which has highlighted Tyla’s continuous success throughout this year as reason enough for her to at least score a single nomination at the Grammy’s.
“She kept up the momentum in March with a remarkable, self-titled debut album that we predicted would clinch a Grammy nod for Album of the Year and should have been a shoo-in for Best Global and Best Pop Vocal Album.”

Although it has not been confirmed, some South African users are of the impression that Tyla’s speech at the VMA’s when she called the institution out for their lack of effort when it comes to African music and artists. Others have joked that the Grammy’s agenda is against South African artists such as Doja Cat, whose father is South African was also left out of the list despite one of the more exciting projects.
