The South African Police Service has arrested six people in connection with the murder of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.
At the age of 24 years, the talented soccer player and Olympian from Mitchells Plain tragically lost his life after being shot while driving his red VW Golf 8 GTI into a petrol station on 14th Avenue.
Before signing a two-year contract with Kaizer Chiefs, Luke made his debut in the National First Division. In his first season of professional football, he made 18 league appearances, leading him to sign a long-term deal with the South African Premier Division club, SuperSport United, in the summer of 2018.
As per reports by IOL, Colonel Mavela Masondo, the provincial police spokesperson says, “While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 series. The suspects pointed a firearm [at him] and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once in the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice.”
Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni told the above-mentioned source that earlier this week the police force arrested six people on charges of murder and hijacking. It was also discovered that his car was already stripped.
“Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijacking in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing,” says the police commissioner.
On Friday, the suspects will be making their first appearance at the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg.
