Sonia Mbele’s son, Donell Mbele, who was charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend last November, walks free. This is after the Randburg Magistrates Court knocked off the physical assault charge laid against him on Monday.
Reokeditswe Makete made news last year when she decided to release a string of photos and videos of the alleged injuries she sustained from being brutally assaulted by Donell Mbele, according to Zimoja. Soon after, she decided to open a case against him despite her being afraid that he was going to kill her as he had threatened to do so before, says the publication.
Devastated by the allegation, Sonia Mbele expressed deep discontent with her son’s actions and promised to support Reokeditswe. In her disappointment, she took to Instagram, condemning her son’s behavior.
On her Instagram, she wrote, “As a mother, I wish she had come to me to inform me on what was going on because finding out on social media broke my heart. I’ve always been there; I’ve always been supportive. With that said, Donell will face his demons, take accountability for his actions, and let the law take its course. I refuse to raise a man like his father. Rehab, therapy, and internal healing will prevail.” She lived up to her statement by quickly placing him in a rehab facility. Reokeditswe was also booked into a mental institution by her parents to help with her depression.

According to Zimoja, Reokeditswe failed to appear in court five times, which resulted in the matter being struck off the roll by the Randburg Magistrates Court. After reading Reokeditswe’s statement, Donell’s legal representative, Tiyani Vukeya, states that he knew the allegations against his client were going to be weak. Prior to Reokeditswe’s no-shows at court and shortly following the allegations, many of their friends claimed that their relationship was toxic and that they were abusive towards each other.
Although there is no excuse for extreme forms of physical violence, the actions of Donell were later proven to be a form of retaliation as Reokeditswe admitted to assaulting him first in an Uber ride home. Furthermore the publication stated, Reokeditswe failed to supply enough evidence to the National Prosecuting Authority to lay a charge against him and avoided interviews with the investigating officer in the case. She later reported that she no longer wished to carry on with the case.
Donell, now a free man, says that he has learned an important lesson, which is to walk away from any argument regardless of gender. He further adds that it is important to leave a relationship once it becomes toxic, as your partners can’t be held accountable and responsible for your actions.
