A time of introspection as the big day looms.
With just two months away from reaching the big 50, former miss South Africa Basetsana Kumalo has decided to reflect on the past three decades of her life by remembering the journey travelled that led to this point.
“Thirty years ago, I had the honour to represent our country on the Miss World stage, I didn’t walk alone on that stage, I was carried by every South African and as a country we came second in the pageant.
“It was a critical time in our history, 1994, the dawn of a new democracy, the rainbow nation and our first black President, Tata Nelson Mandela became our leader.”

Known for her strides in the world of pageantry, her journey in the beauty and entertainment industry started at a young age. In 1990 the proud wife to Romeo Kumalo kicked off her journey by participating in a local pageant and was later crowned both Miss Soweto and Miss Black South Africa.
This seemed to have been the beginning of endless opportunities for the then 16-year-old, providing her with the experience she needed to excel in the space she found herself, especially as the country transitioned into a democracy.
In 1994, she achieved one of the greatest achievements of all, being crowned Miss South Africa, followed by another achievement being crowned a runner up for Miss World.
Today, she not only boasts these milestone career accolades, but she’s also a wife, mother, businesswoman and a philanthropist juggling all these titles extremely well.
“Fast forward 30 years later, I look back upon that time and remain in awe and gratitude of what that platform did for me. It catapulted me to find my voice, chart my own cause, write my own script and fulfil my divinely ordained destiny,” she explains.

“As I look towards to my 50th birthday, I am thankful for the road before and I look forward to the road ahead and what it has in store for me. So grateful for the love that has been extended to me over the years. I don’t take it for granted and count it all joy,” she concluded.
