Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena is beaming with pride as he praises star goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as being the kind of player who has now changed the game for goalkeepers.
The Sundowns mentor recently had an interview with local news publication TimesLIVE he proudly touched on how Ronwen’s distribution skills from the back of the field have laid the foundation for the type of game plan his players want to play.
In his interview, he said: “I think what Ronwen has done this season will shape South African goalkeeping culture for many years.
“The number one requirement is that you must give eleven players possession. That is what Ronwen is going to do; he is going to influence the tactical thinking of South African football about the profile of the goalkeepers.”
With the team currently on an unbeaten streak as a result of Ronwen’s rapid shot-stopping abilities, coach Rhulani says that there is no doubt that if this continues, Ronwen will be winning the PSL Player of the Season Award.
Earlier this year the Bafana captain impressed the entire continent with his calm approach to the national team’s participation in the African Cup of Nations (Afcon).
In the quarterfinals of the competition, he showed just how much passion he had for the game after denying Cape Verde four spot kicks to take Bafana to the semi-final of the competition for the first time in 24 years.
His heroic efforts saw him later walk away with Afcon’s Best Goalkeeper Award.
