Former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki has made it clear that despite disagreements with the way the African National Congress (ANC) governs the country, he still remains a devoted member of the ruling party.
On Thursday Thabo led the party’s election campaign in one of their biggest supporting townships, Soweto.
In the past, the former president has been extremely critical of the ANC and the amount of corruption which takes place within the party. However, in his recent address, he assured residents living in the township that rooting out the rotten apples was his top priority.
In a conversation with Eyewitness News, he said:
“I have not put aside my concerns. The concerns that are expressed by the people when the people say ‘We are unhappy about this, about the other, about the ANC’, those concerns are genuine and we must attend to them.”
He continued, “That’s why when I say vote for ANC, we are also making a commitment to the people that we will attend to those problems within the ANC itself.”
After having a meet and greet with citizens while en route to Jabulani Mall, Thabo took to the podium sharing that he sensed that there was still belief in the party.
He later took a hard stance promising locals that the party will take every effort to get its house in order by getting rid of those who join the party with criminal intent.
“As we talked around the mall, I was happy to see the faces of people; they are confident that the problems we are facing will be solved.
“They have to be solved. I promise we will fix the ANC so that it is able to represent the people.”
