As we approach the final lap of 2024, it is important to reflect and introspect on the personal journey that one has been on throughout the course of the year. Resolutions help us keep track of our goals and plans, however sticking to these is not as easy as it sounds, so we’re here to unpack how we’ve done so far.
The end of December is usually a confusing time as many look forward to the new beginnings that come with the new year, while some anxiously look back to some missed opportunities or areas that need improving. Either way, it is important to remain as calm and level-headed as possible in order to avoid making any rash or impulsive decisions.
In the spirit of accountability, it is my duty to inquire about your resolutions and how far you have managed to get with them. The Pilates class you vowed to give a chance, how many sessions did you actually go to? And that new language you were interested in learning, or even that holiday you were hell-bent on taking at the beginning of the year, how are things looking on that side?
Although it may appear judgmental, these questions are merely there to help you reflect and hold yourself accountable in order to be able to do better, because you now know better. The lesson here is not to stop making resolutions too quickly but rather ensure that you set attainable goals that are within your reach. According to the National Association for Continence, new year’s resolutions not only assist with establishing self-awareness but also encourage people to adopt a broader and more critical view of their lives and the changes they need to make to achieve specific goals.
Personally, I never beat myself up too much about not ticking everything off of my to-do list because that just means I get a fresh 365 days to try again. However, it is important to remain accountable and not procrastinate, as opposed to facing challenges. Very Well Mind encourages you to keep your ‘why’ in mind, the reason and purpose for setting that goal and that will give you a bit more encouragement to go for it.
As you prepare for the new year, remember that setting goals for the person you want or envision yourself becoming should not be a daunting or dreadful experience. Setting realistic resolutions and remembering that ‘slow and steady wins the race’ is a recipe recommended by experts such as Piedmont Medical.
