Thuso Mbedu has made history and continues to fly the South African flag high.
The 31-year-old Pietermaritzburg-born star is the first black South African actor to appear on The View and shared how much she loved shooting The Women King in South Africa.
Inspired by actual events, the movie stars Viola Davis as General Nanisca ‘as she trains the next generation of recruits and readies them for battle against an enemy determined to destroy their way of life.’
‘I obviously didn’t know when auditioning they would shoot it in South Africa, but it made sense to be done that way,’ she said.
‘It was absolutely amazing,’ said Thuso Mbedu in response to Whoopi Goldberg’s questions about how it was filming the movie in South Africa.
Thuso added that the first weeks of shooting were filmed in her home province, KwaZulu-Natal. The actor also asked Viola Davis to share a beautiful meant that happened on set of the “rain story.”
Viola said she got to witness drummers sing a song to stop the rain, which they say almost affected filming.

International Emmy-award-nominated, Thuso shared how much she loved working with Viola and said she was “great'”
‘We first met during the audition process and had a creative conversation about the script; if anything, it reassured me that I’m in safe hands,’ she recalled.
‘It wasn’t a space where I had to prove myself after her; it was just a conversation – give and take – and it really set the tone for how we would work together,’ said Thuso. ‘We then went on to struggle together in training,’ she also added.
Their castmates, Sheila Atim and Lashana Lynch, also detailed their experience working on the film and some reactions they received when they shared the movie trailer with friends.
Atim said her friend called her crying after she sent her the trailer. Her friend said she had even asked three other random people on the street to watch the trailer.
‘There have been so many responses like that,” she said. “Seeing images like that has conjured up feelings in people.’
