Thousands of people across the country including activists and students, celebrities, social media influencers are boycotting on all media platforms demanding justice for a 7-year-old girl Cwecwe who was raped at Eastern Cape’s Bergview College in October 2024. The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the school management allegedly refusing to cooperate with police.
Among many South Africans countrywide, media personality Somizi Mhlongo advocates for “Justice for Cwecwe,” a primary school learner. The school has been deregistered due to the principal’s refusal to comply with the investigation. Somizi has expressed his support for the “Justice for Cwecwe” campaign, offering to pay legal fees for Cwecwe’s family. A petition on Change.org calls for transparency and a thorough investigation. According to the MSN publication, a group of anti-gender-based violence protestors marched in Durban to demand immediate action against the perpetrators.

The IOL news publication reports that police minister Senzo Mchunu and SAPS have reassured the public that they are handling Cwecwe’s case with the utmost seriousness. It is mentioned that the Not In My Name International and the MK Youth League are calling for immediate action and a trauma-informed approach to the case. The principal’s refusal to cooperate with the investigation is also concerning, notes the news publication.
It is a sad reality that for justice to be thoroughly served in our country, people need to take drastic actions to ensure the authorities do a complete job. This tragedy is a reminder of the many horrible things that women and children face in South Africa daily, with most differing in silence, and it has become evident that the only way to fight is for women and children to stand up on their own, for themselves.
