Tragedy strikes as car collides with elephant at Victoria Falls

by Sergio Miller

One person has tragically died while five others sustained serious injuries following a collision involving an elephant and a motor vehicle at the iconic landmark, Victoria Falls.

The Victoria Falls is a waterfall located on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe and is renowned for being the world’s largest waterfall.

While often admired by tourists for its beautiful scenery and diverse wildlife, which includes elephants, buffalo, hippos, zebras, giraffes, and various antelope species, this past week, the area became a horror story for a group of three after colliding with a giant female elephant.

According to a report by the news and entertainment publication, The South African, a Toyota Isis containing a group of six recently collided while travelling near the iconic landmark on Wednesday.

It is reported that the incident occurred when the driver of the vehicle attempted to overturn another vehicle that had come to a stationary halt to try and avoid the elephant.

Unaware of what was lying ahead, this is when the accident happened, causing the elephant to land on the roof of the car.

Zimbabwean news publication Zim Online noted that occupants were trapped for at least 30 minutes before the medical team could assist.

Rangers of the Department of Parks and Wildlife later had to euthanise the elephant so that it could be removed with the vehicle. It was later reported that one of its front passengers had died, while the rest were taken to the hospital to treat their injuries.
