Award-winning comedian Trevor Noah recently shared that he had an “oopsie” moment years ago after he unknowingly performed for free at the wrong wedding.
The former The Daily Show host shared the story of his accidental gig on his podcast What Now? with Trevor Noah.
In a snippet of the podcast shared on social media, Trevor shares, “There was a time in South Africa when the most popular thing you could get for a wedding was a comedian. You would hire a comedian for the wedding, and it was all the rage in the country.”
Noting that he had a gig at a wedding located at a golf country club, Trevor stated that at the time, he had a “decent amount of familiarity” in his home country.
“People knew me as a comedian. I wasn’t super famous but people just knew me.”
At the wedding venue, a man turned to Trevor and asked if he was the comedian set to perform at the love-filled event. Confirming that he was, the comedian hopped on stage and did what he does best.
“They were a great crowd. One of my favourite gigs ever,” Trevor shared. He added that on his way back home, the promoter who booked the gig called him, sounding quite furious.
The promoter asked where Trevor was, and the star replied, “I’m driving home … I’ve already been to the gig.”
The unnamed promoter then shared with Trevor, “They’re [the people who booked Trevor] on the phone with me right now. They said you never showed up.” The comedian responded, “I did the opposite of not showing up. I showed up like crazy!”
Concluding his story, Trevor said, “Turns out, at the same venue, there were two weddings happening. They let me perform, the other wedding waited more than an hour and they didn’t get the wedding performer, and I performed for those other people for free.
“I felt very sad for the other people’s wedding but also happy that I had a great gig.”
