In early February 2023, Idols SA announced that the national singing competition would come to an end after producing 19 seasons. It has also been announced that the final season will premiere on 8 July.
Losing Randall Abrahams, Unathi Nkayi and Gareth Cliff over the years, the show added two new judges – singer and actress Thembi Seete and musician JR Bogopa – in 2022. The show kept Somizi Mhlongo after he returned from a break he took after facing allegations of physical abuse against his former husband Mohale Motaung.
The announcement of the premiere date of the final season was made by Mzansi Magic on its social media platforms. “The wait is over! The final season of Idols is coming exclusive to your screen! Be ready on 8 July for iLast number!” read the Twitter post.
