Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the murders of two Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) party members a day before the casting of special votes in South Africa.
The duo was killed in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni in an alleged political clash with members affiliated with the African National Congress (ANC), the suspects will appear in Palmridge Magistrate’s Court.
The Gauteng police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the incident to EastCoastRadio and said:
“It is reported the two members were shot and killed during a dispute with members affiliated with the ANC at Thwala section. One victim died at the scene while the other was declared dead on arrival at hospital. One firearm and a knife were recovered at the scene. The motive for the incident will form part of the investigations.”
Speaking to the publication MK party spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndlela confirmed that the victims were its members and said the altercation was apparently due to road rage.
“The question is were they shot by virtue of political intolerance or what is the actual cause? The feedback we getting is that it might be an issue of road rage with people believed to be ANC members.”
The shooting incident comes days after the arrest of Jossey Buthane, an ANC and former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) member for an attempted murder charge after a shooting incident in Juju Valley, Seshego during political campaigning.
It is reported that tensions flared in Juju Valley when EFF and ANC campaigned in the same area, which led to a political clash that left a 25-year-old man injured and a nine-year-old girl was shot in the head.
