It seems like the Maskandi genre took over the big stations for the song of the year competition, this is proved by Maskandi artists Khuzani Mpungose and Mthandeni ‘SK’ Manqele clinching the title for 2024.
Khuzani won on Umhlobo Wenene FM’s campaign titled Ingoma Yonyaka with his single Imbongolo, which won him R25 000, while Mthandeni won on Ukhozi FM with his single featuring Mawhoo, Gucci, which saw his driving away in a new VW Polo vehicle.
The two talented artists were rewarded at different events by the radio stations. The car handover for Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka (song of the year) competition was at the Durban studios, during the Woza Nabangani Bakho show that airs between 3 pm to 6 pm.
Beaming with pride, Mthandeni excitedly took to his Instagram page to share a video of his new prize.

Khuzani was rewarded with R25 000 during a live broadcast of 123 Pholaz Unplugged which is hosted by Amaza Ntshanga and Lusanda Mbane from 1 pm to 3 pm. During the event, the maskandi artist was presented with his cash prize, a symbolic check and a certificate. He also serenaded the listeners with a live performance of his chart-topping song, Imbongolo.
Radio station of Umhlobo Wenene and Tru FM said earlier, “This year’s Ingoma Yonyaka winner, Imbongolo by Khuzani, not only celebrates the rich heritage of maskandi but also demonstrates how South Africans are increasingly embracing diverse cultural sounds. It is inspiring to see a genre once marginalised transcend boundaries and connect with such a wide audience. We are proud to host this moment and continue to celebrate artists who make music that unites the nation,” he said.
He recently took to his Instagram page, to share the exciting moment of his win.
